Launch event of the WMO-IRENA joint publication on ”2022 Year in Review: Climate-driven Global Renewable Energy Potential Resources and Energy Demand”

About the event:

This side event served as a platform to launch the joint publication by WMO and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), providing both a high-level and technical overview of the report. During the 1-hour event the publication’s crucial findings was presented, followed by a detailed presentation of its technical aspects and discussion around its key messages through a high-level panel discussion, featuring perspectives from both WMO and IRENA.

The objectives of the events were as follows:

  • Raise awareness about the report and underscore the pioneering role of WMO and IRENA in the fields of climate change, climate variability, and renewable energies.
  • Enhance understanding of climate drivers and their interactions with renewable resources (wind, solar and hydropower) and energy demand, emphasizing their vital role in bolstering the resilience of energy transition and systems.
  • Highlight the necessity of adapting market structures to play a central role in providing the required flexibility during the transitional phase from centralized to decentralized power systems.
  • Emphasize the significance of comprehensive and systematic energy data collection and sharing to enhance knowledge and understanding of how climate variability and change impact energy supply and demand.
